Dear colleagues,

Hope you had a very good start to the new year! Was glad to have caught
some of you in Geneva, and apologies to not have been able to say hello
properly while on site - I took ill on the last day and had to basically
leave early. It was a really good IGF - not least because there's a
gender main session (hooray!) - but for all the impt points
comprehensively listed by Lynn below.

As an outgoing MAG member, I would also like to express my great
appreciation for the past 3 years of serving as a member with all of
you. It's been an invaluable experience of getting a deeper
understanding of the critical role that IGF plays in the area of IG, and
the importance of the principles that championed by the IGF and MAG in
this process, esp on multistakeholder and diverse participation,
inclusion and transparency. And how a tricky it is to get this as right
as currently possible. It's been a privilege to be part of the work in
thinking this through, and I look forward to further innovation and
responsive developments by the current and upcoming MAG.

Huge thanks to your leadership as well Lynn. It's been fantastic to have
you as chair during this period, and your openness, energy, commitment,
brilliance and wisdom in helming this.

I'll be continuing to contribute to the work through the BPF on Gender,
and look forward to continuous engagement with everyone from a different
perch.

Warmest regards,
jac

The program was very strong and topical, as the IGF secretariat reports that the largest category of sub-themes was "New Technologies & Emerging Issues”, covering topics such as Artificial Intelligence, Fakenews, Internet of Things, Virtual Reality, and Big Data among others. This was followed closely by Cybersecurity. And, registration was very strong - I understand it was either the 1st or 2nd highest ever; full statistics will be out later.

Specifically, with regards to the Opening Session where interactive panels (professionally moderated) with open mike sessions replaced the previous program of approx. thirty (30) stand-alone five (5) minute speeches. This new format enabled some key messages to be fed into short, non-binding 'Geneva Messages’ which synthesized the key outcomes (and often the diversity of opinions on key policy issues) from the two high level sessions and the five main sessions. The messages were intended to contribute to the development of more tangible outcomes at the IGF as well as being able to share key points within a matter of hours after the sessions. The messages were posted through the IGF meeting week, and will be added to the Chairs report. See: https://www.intgovforum.org/multilingual/content/igf-2017-geneva-messages

They joined the newcomers track, the new format sessions, and the additional NRI collaborative sessions which addressed some key topics and were well organized by the NRI community. It is clear that a lot of thought and work went into all the sessions, and it showed.

It covers many other areas of improvements, including operations, etc. and is well worth the time to read.
