Dear Chair, Secretariat, MAG colleagues, and the representatives of the host country,

Happy New Year 2018! May the new year bring you a lot of happiness and smiles.

First of all, my apologies for late. I was back from the New Year’s holiday.

As many colleagues have already said, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Chair’s leadership, Secretariat’s and host country’s hard work, and strenuous efforts made by all MAG colleagues for the successful IGF Geneva 2017! As a first-year MAG member as well as one of Japanese stakeholders, I very much enjoyed and learned a lot from various sessions and meetings.

I strongly believe that the IGF is peerless and has a unique value as well as unlimited potential. There is still room for us to draw out the potential, so I look forward to working together with you for the future successful IGFs where more and more multi-stakeholders participate and discuss various kinds of existing and emerging issues/challenges to find viable solutions in each field. I think that the IGF should be a “catalyst” to lead optimal rulemaking at global, regional, and national levels, and am confident that we can make such IGF.

Thank you again and look forward to seeing you next time.

Sincerely,

Kenta

Subject: [IGFmaglist] Thank you and Best wishes for the New Year

Dear colleagues,

A very big and sincere thank you for all the hard work that went into making this IGF a success. The program was very strong and topical, as the IGF secretariat reports that the largest category of sub-themes was "New Technologies & Emerging Issues”, covering topics such as Artificial Intelligence, Fakenews, Internet of Things, Virtual Reality, and Big Data among others. This was followed closely by Cybersecurity. And, registration was very strong - I understand it was either the 1st or 2nd highest ever; full statistics will be out later.

I would like to extend a big thank you to the Host Country Switzerland for all their support and especially their encouragement and willingness to experiment. Specifically, with regards to the Opening Session where interactive panels (professionally moderated) with open mike sessions replaced the previous program of approx. thirty (30) stand-alone five (5) minute speeches. This new format enabled some key messages to be fed into short, non-binding 'Geneva Messages’ which synthesized the key outcomes (and often the diversity of opinions on key policy issues) from the two high level sessions and the five main sessions. The messages were intended to contribute to the development of more tangible outcomes at the IGF as well as being able to share key points within a matter of hours after the sessions. The messages were posted through the IGF meeting week, and will be added to the Chairs report. See: https://www.intgovforum.org/multilingual/content/igf-2017-geneva-messages

These innovations and others were meant to address various requested areas of improvement. They joined the newcomers track, the new format sessions, and the additional NRI collaborative sessions which addressed some key topics and were well organized by the NRI community. It is clear that a lot of thought and work went into all the sessions, and it showed.

All these innovations or pilots if you will, will be evaluated by both the outgoing and incoming MAG, so please stay tuned. As has often been said, once a MAG member, always a MAG member,

I have attached a presentation prepared by the IGF secretariat this past November for a CSTD meeting which was looking at the progress made against the recommendations in the CSTD WG on IGF Improvements. It covers many other areas of improvements, including operations, etc. and is well worth the time to read.

Finally, I wish you and all your loved ones the very best for the holidays and much happiness, health and success for the coming year.

With warmest wishes,

Lynn
