+1
Thanks Lea for bringing this proposal to the group. I agree that we need to closely work with our Brazilian colleagues and hear their views in order to efficiently proceed.
Best regards,
Victoria Romero

Dear all,
According to my notes, the Brazilian colleagues are also organising a meeting/reception open to the broader community on May 25th, during the WSIS Forum. To increase synergies, avoid duplication, and support the efforts by our Brazilian friends, it would be useful to better understand their strategy and whether/where they need support - in May and beyond.
According to the TOR for this group, we have already settled that IGF renewal is one of our objectives. As Juan Carlos, Marilyn, and others have noted, influencing the positions of NY/Geneva missions will be a core part of achieving this objective. The question that follows is how best to do this in our capacity as the MAG. Should we just offer whatever support the Brazilians find most useful, or should we be doing anything in addition to their efforts? If the answer is yes, then we should have a strategy (with a clear set of objectives, audience mapping, relevant activities, and timelines + MAG volunteers to lead on each activity) on which to base our decisions on organising particular meetings/ activities. For reference, I'm pasting below an email that I sent around on March 24 with activities that could be considered as part of this effort.
In any case, I think a better understanding of what the strategy is on the side of our Brazilian colleagues would be beneficial for this discussion.
Warm wishes,
Lea

Dear all,
To move forward with the discussion on the actions necessary to ensure IGF mandate renewal, I would like to share a few ideas with the group. This was drafted on the basis of a number of activities contributing to this objective already taking place (e.g. general messaging), but without a concrete action plan to achieve the outcome we want. These are preliminary thoughts put together with the aim to get a more substantive conversation going and any feedback is very welcome.
While I'm sure there's more that could be done (and other similar initiatives by other groups should be supported), here are a few activities that the MAG could decide to take up:
1. General messaging at major events by MAG Chair and members
This is already taking place and should continue until the December WSIS+10 High Level Event. MAG should make sure that all messages contribute to IGF mandate renewal by highlighting information relevant for specific audiences.
2. Targeted messaging of primary audiences relevant for IGF renewal
This activity could focus on targeted engagement with key decision-makers on behalf of the MAG. It could be a combination of bilateral and multilateral meetings organised by the MAG Chair, supported by the host country (Brazil) and MAG members. It could also include targeted communiques. If appropriate, the MAG could encourage the host country to include targeted messages in their official invites to high level government representatives. Targeted messaging could be done via A) NY missions; B) Geneva missions; C) Outreach in capitals.
3. Targeted event in NY in September
The MAG could consider facilitating a multistakeholder event on the margins of its September meeting in New York. The event itself could be a mix of information-sharing and strategic outreach. Ideally, a few MAG 'champions' from different stakeholder groups would take the lead in organising this event. Governments that could lead the effort could be Brazil (as this year's hosts) and Mexico (as potential next host). It might be an idea to invite all past IGFhosts to participate in or co-sponsor the event. This could be done in addition to or in collaboration with other similar initiatives.
4. Public campaign
The MAG could consider running a public campaign for IGF mandate renewal. Depending on resources, there are different ways this could be done. The MAG could consider drafting a simple statement endorsing IGF mandate renewal and ask stakeholders to sign on. To make this an effective advocacy tool, It would be particularly valuable to get sign on from governments, starting with those on the MAG. If an event in NY is organised in September, this could be an opportunity to launch the campaign, or seek broader sign-on, as appropriate.
5. Embedding the renewal message in national, regional, and global IGF programs
The MAG should consider how the program of the upcoming IGF in Joao Pessoa, as well as various national and regional IGFs could contribute to ensuring mandate renewal. This could be done by organising a main session that addresses the issue of mandate renewal, and/or by encouraging workshop proposals that aim to contribute to this objective.
As noted above, this list is not meant to discourage other ideas, but rather as a starting point for discussion.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!
Best,
Lea Kaspar

A pity it can’t be done on the 20th May as MAG members could be invited (or through their Missions) to participate and influence somehow, helping in explaining IGF and what is going on worldwide on this area. On the 19th I imagine that not all MAG members will be in Geneva timely (if I understand the objective correctly).

Marilyn,
During the last MAG call the Brazilian delegation informed that it will reach out GVA delegations probably 19 May and NY delegations some time in June.

WSIS +10 consultations will emerge very rapidly, post June announcement of Co Faciliators. At least two consultations would seem probable. I 'doubt' that we will know until June, so perhaps we focus on the principle -- and ask how we could as MAG propose to participate. Given the time span, perhaps we can be a little flexible.
I wonder, though, if we should focus first on finalizing messages. Another idea could be engagement with governments as former hosts, governments as present and past MAG members, building on the Brazilian outreach. The MAG will be in Geneva in May.
How about a mission invitation to a reception with the MAG at this meeting?
I could ask IGFSA if there might be support.

Subject: [Outreach_com_2015] Thoughts on the September MAG meeting and WSIS outreach
I was wondering what the Outreach committee members thought about the September MAG meeting with respect to any WSIS outreach. If the WSIS+10 meetings will be taking place at other, different times maybe we should change course and look at working around those meetings. They are not yet announced, but it would be good to start thinking about our WSIS approach.
I am seeking thoughts/feedback from all of you on WSIS outreach so please send it along to the group.
