IGF strategy and strengthening in 2020: A series of pre-IGF online discussions convened by the IGF MAG chair and the MAG Working Group on IGF Strategy and Strengthening during September and October 2020
The IGF's mandate was renewed for a further 10 years by the UN General Assembly in December 2015. The current year, 2020, marks the midway point of this extended mandate. In addition, the recently released UN Secretary-General's Roadmap for Digital Cooperation and its support for a strengthened and expanded IGF (the IGF+) presents the opportunity for deeper engagement on the IGF's achievements and challenges and for exploring approaches for addressing emerging Internet policy issues. To reflect on the IGF's achievement of its mandate and contribute to the discussion on the architecture for digital cooperation, the IGF MAG chair, in collaboration with the IGF MAG Working Group on IGF Strengthening and Strategy, is convening a series of online discussions during September and October 2020.
THIS WEEK'S TWO DISCUSSIONS:
1. The IGF and capacity development - Tuesday, 27 October 2020, 13:00-15:00 UTC - https://intgovforum.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJMvcuGvqDorGNxzHkmZXO7SSJeI6a3I6egE Hide Details<https://www.intgovforum.org/multilingual/content/mag-chair-activities>
Date
Tuesday 27 October 2020, 13:00-15:00 UTC
Overview of topic
IGF as a platform for capacity building
“The need for digital capacity-building is substantial. Achieving real and sustained progress in the various dimensions of digitalization requires skills development and effective training, in particular in developing countries.”
The UN Secretary-General’s Roadmap for Digital Cooperation, June 2020
To be effective and fair, Internet governance must be inclusive - it is important to find ways to make sure all stakeholders and parts of the world can be involved in the discussions and decision-making processes. With its ability to bring people together at the global level, combined with the National and Regional IGFs that link back to the country level, the IGF is well-placed to play a part in the necessary capacity-building.
This webinar will begin with a review of plans to further capacity-building within the broader digital cooperation environment. It will then explore the ways in which the IGF currently contributes to capacity-building, and how these activities might be further developed as part of the plans to strengthen the IGF.
This discussion will be stimulated by the presentation of a draft IGF capacity development framework (which can be found at https://www.intgovforum.org/multilingual/filedepot_download/3813/2273), as well as perspectives on the work of Schools on Internet Governance and Youth Initiatives.

Overview of topic
An overview of efforts the IGF is currently making to respond to the goal to be inclusive and affirm linguistic diversity. However, simply providing translation into UN languages of some documents and interpretation at certain sessions, is not only not enough, it could also consolidate the marginalisation of other languages and the people that speak them. Should the IGF make greater use of machine translation? Are there other emerging technologies the IGF should consider using to achieve more inclusion and linguistic diversity.
