Hi all,

Maybe of interest: Keith Mitchell did a talk on the ‘great British IXP failures’ at a recent UKNOF meeting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cr827f4cDj4

I attached screenshots of the ‘lessons learned’, for those with bandwidth constraints. You can see them in the video starting from https://youtu.be/Cr827f4cDj4?t=1159 . No surprises there btw.

After the presentation Ben Hedges from LINX asks the question what metric one would use to define ‘succes’ of an IXP: how does one define a successful IXP? Keith goes on to say that:

‘It is about critical mass. Do you have traffic, do you have participants. Is there peering?, (…) It is also about longevity. If you still have your IXP after 5 years then you’re probably successful. If you’re not going to make it then you’re probably going to fail within 5 years. I think it’s also about: do you have a functioning organisation, is there transparency, is there neutrality, is there effective governance? Is there physical sustainability, is there sustainability in terms of personnel and facilities. I think it is one of those things that is self-evident but also measurable.’

Anyway. Fyi I will not be able to join next week’s call but will try to provide input and suggested changes/additions to the draft before Tuesday.

Regards,
Bastiaan
