My personal view: NO direct role for MAG at this point.
MAG could ONLY propose a statement from MAG members to ensure maximum participation and attendance. We are focused on program. WE cannot speak as MAG on any topic that is not about program.
BUT, we can speak about characteristics of meeting location and dates which maximize attendance and support the program success of the IGF.
My recommendation: Secretariat and UN DESA should, with support from Interim Chair, address meeting dates with host.
My individual comment as only one MAG member: it would be bizarro land to have over 50 MAG members engaging in such a discussion.
We should respect the role of the Secretariat and Interim Chair, and 'ask them' ...

Excellent put, Mark. This is not the year in which we should risk failure of the IGF meeting in any way.Agree with Markus to try to involve in dialogue with Turkish organisers on finding the win-win. Chengetai, Markus - please let us know how MAG or anyone of us can help with this dialogue. Best! Vlada From: Igfmaglist [mailto:igfmaglist-bounces at intgovforum.org] On Behalf Of Markus Kummer

Subject: Re: [IGFmaglist] Change of dates for IGF 2014 Dear all, Mark has eloquently expressed my immediate reaction to these proposed changes. This could well be fatal for the future of the IGF in a year that will be crucial for the evolving Internet governance landscape! Let's engage in a dialogue with our Turkish hosts to find a solution that works for all concerned. Best regardsMarkus From: <CARVELL>, Mark <Mark.Carvell at Culture.gsi.gov.uk>

Subject: Re: [IGFmaglist] Change of dates for IGF 2014 Dear Chengetai I would be grateful if you would clarify if this is a consultation with stakeholders or a fait accompli (“request….inform”). I would recommend rejecting this change of timing to the mid-peak holiday season in Europe. The risk of a likely serious downturn on numbers of stakeholders from Europe and elsewhere in the northern hemisphere would outweigh any venue cost benefit in my view. The immediately preceding preparatory period for finalising workshops, presentations and speeches would also be negatively impacted due to many stakeholders taking holidays in mid-July/August. Most Ministers and Parliamentarians in Europe will also be on their summer break. This of all years, being prior to IGF mandate renewal in the context of the WSIS+10 review, is not the time to contemplate such a risk of lower stakeholder attendance at the IGF. Subject: [IGFmaglist] Change of dates for IGF 2014 Dear All,
The Host Country has requested that the dates of the IGF 2014 meeting be moved to 19-22 August 2014. I would be grateful if you could inform your various constituencies of the change in dates.
The change of dates have been necessitated by the availability of a more cost-effective venue.
Apologies for any inconveniences this change may bring.
Best regards,
Chengetai
