Marilyn,
You are right, transcripts and translations would be fabulous! I think
that what we want to word towards is the objective promised in the 2006 press
release <http://www.un.org/News/Press/docs/2006/sga1006.doc.htm>, which is
the only source that I am aware of that sets out the expectations for the
MAG (please correct me if there are any others):
*"Governments called for the Forum to be convened in an “open and inclusive
process”. Accordingly, the Advisory Group will carry out its work in an
open, inclusive and transparent manner, and will seek to make the best
possible use of electronic working methods, including online
consultations."*
Since staff and resources are so limited, the approach that works best for
suggestions from the MAG on improvements is, where possible, for the
proposer to also offer to volunteer to help provide the solution. I think
that this clearly one of those cases. From my perspective, I'm hoping to
have access to meetings that are held at times, and a simple recording will
be very helpful for me (much better than what we have now).
I would be be more than happy to help suggest (and even provide) the
technology for the recording.
Marilyn, will you accompany your recommendation with a volunteer offer to
work on a solution (and I believe you are suggesting raising funding) for
transcripts and translations? That would certainly be welcomed by many,
I'm sure.
Best,
Patrick
