Thank you for this Carolyn.

Since we haven't had any feedback or thoughts on the below. I'd like to send this to the MAG today. So last chance to pipe in on the messaging.

Also it would be great to briefly meet up at the GCCS if you will be there to discuss work going forward.

Many thanks.

Dominique

Subject: RE: Messages for GCCS next week

To get us started on Dominique's request, below is the last version of the proposed high level messaging shared with this group some time back, incorporating comments from Markus and others. I have not yet looked at the IGFSA brochure that Kyle just shared, so don't know if there are more details there that can be incorporated.

Proposed high level messaging: High level messages (in FAQ form):
* What is the IGF - multistakeholder, open, inclusive
A global platform for dialogue where various stakeholder groups, including governments, business, technical experts, academic researchers, international organizations, and other interested organizations, gather as equals to discuss public policy issues related to Internet governance. The IGF is open and inclusive - anyone from any part of the world can join the discussion at any time. There are no members and no fees.

* Why the IGF - develop the information society globally
The IGF was created by a mandate given to the UN Secretary General at the World Summit on the Information Society in 2005. The mandate was to "to convene a platform for multistakeholder dialogue" as a neutral forum to facilitate discussion of public policy issues related to Internet governance, to foster the sustainability, robustness, security, stability, and development of the Internet globally. Increasing Internet access and building capacities in developing countries are part of its charter to develop the information society globally. The IGF's mandate is up for review and renewal in 2015.

* How does the IGF work - annual meetings and intersessional work
The IGF meets annually to discuss issues that are selected from those proposed by the multistakeholder community. Participants identify, discuss, exchange information, and share best practices to further progress on the respective issues. The IGF has no policy-making decision - it is unique as the only global forum that can facilitate holistic dialogues on public policy issues amongst the various stakeholders.

Further information requested for high level messaging (combined from the original message & our discussion earlier this week) - anything we can get here will be helpful:
Statistics on the IGF:
- number & demographics of participants over the years
- number & regions of countries participating over the years
- number of sessions or policy topics discussed over the years (and examples)
- Participation of countries and their ministers in the Day 0 event and throughout the week
- Demographics of IGF MAG members
- Speakers including IGO representation at the IGF
- Developing country participation
- Gender participation
- Remote participation

(and a note from Matthew's original email)
Also, one area that we felt we have not discussed or articulated sufficiently is how we capture the value of the IGF in the way it breaks down the silos and brings together policymakers, technologies and advocates, and how the IGF enables the audience to explore and discuss the impact of technology on policy and vice versa. One added value of IGF is that it sees the total picture (through workshops/panels/BPs, etc.) - for example how IXPs impact connectivity costs that impact services and content development that impact skills and empowerment that impact economic and social development...

Best regards,
Carolyn

Importance: High

The GCCS is next week and I'd like to make sure that the messaging is updated for that meeting.

I know that Matthew, Izumi and Carolyn have met and worked on messages about 6 weeks ago and they have put forward some proposals. Can I ask them and the rest of the group to present a final text by Friday?
