[IGFmaglist] Virtual MAG Meeting XII | Wednesday, 17 July | 11:00hrs UTC |

Dear Chengetai, MAG colleagues

Ahead of the MAG meeting, I am writing to share a written update on the Main Session on Multidisciplinary Policy-Making.

- There is a small change to the title. Rather than "A multidisciplinary policy framework..." (singular), it should be changed to "Multidisciplinary policy frameworks for policy-making in the digital age" (plural) as this allows for more than one approach.

- The organiser is Ben Wallis. No-one else has registered interest, but I am of course very happy to work with someone if a volunteer was to step forward.

I hope that MAG members will look at the googledoc template - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VoHfYnz2CNJ4dHVTnaiLZ0qxZ29uLtKSyJ5v059Bw0U/edit?usp=sharing.

Much of the document is already there in draft form, including comments and questions (I am conscious that it would benefit from ideas and suggestions from other people). Some elements are still missing, such as proposed names of the moderators and rapporteur. Main elements of the proposal are pasted below.

Ben

Policy questions:
- What should be the perspectives, and which stakeholders and disciplines need to be considered, to enable policy-making approaches that are truly multidisciplinary?
- What ideas and examples can we look to in order to help policy-makers?

Agenda:
Part 1 (45 mins) - the what and why, including an exploration of conceptual frameworks, e.g. What is multidisciplinary policy-making? Why is it important to Internet governance and what benefits can it bring?
Part 2 (75 mins) - the how, including concrete examples, e.g. What approaches do speakers think should be taken and why? What mechanisms could be put in place to achieve multidisciplinary policy-making? How does multidisciplinary policy-making happen in practice? What examples or case studies could demonstrate innovative ways to approach the problem? What are the barriers to putting in place more multidisciplinary and integrated policy frameworks, and how can all stakeholders work together to address them?

Speaker ideas:
- Fabrizio Hochschild Drummond, Assistant Secretary-General for Strategic Coordination on the HLPDC recommendation 5B for a "multi-stakeholder "systems" approach for cooperation and regulation that is adaptive, agile, inclusive and fit for purpose for the fast-changing digital age" [IGO]
- Japanese Government representative to talk about the June 2019 G20 Ministerial Declaration's recommendations on "Agile and Flexible Policy Approaches in the Digital Economy" [Government]
- OECD to talk about Going Digital, an integrated policy framework for making the digital transformation work for growth and well-being [IGO]

- International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) to talk about holistic approaches to developing policy [Private Sector]

- Missions Publiques or the Stanford University Center for Deliberative Democracy to talk about the role of deliberative polling to inform Internet governance policy-making [Civil Society]
