Dear Members of the MAG,
As discussed earlier during the virtual call, we will initiate a discussion on the dedicated lists as well.
Given that the secretariat is occupied with other very important work, may I recommend the following schedule for engagement on the main sessions:
      (i) Friday, July 11, 2014: Posting the latest status on each main session on the dedicated list (and on the full MAG list for information), ahead of the proposed call next week.
(ii) Tuesday, July 15, 2014: Receipt of comments and inputs to organizers from members.
(iii) Secretariat to indicate a date for a MAG call on the main sessions any time after Tuesday, July 15, next week, or the week after, depending of the availability.
That way both organizers and volunteers will have a rough timeline to meet each other’s expectations. If the secretariat or any other organizer / member would like to propose changes to the schedule they are very welcome to do so.
Warm regards
Virat Bhatia

Dear Members of the MAG,

Ahead of today’s call, for the main session, proposed for Day 2, Wednesday, September 3, 2014, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., here are a few bullet points on the state of progress:

1. At the 1st MAG meeting in February 2014, in Geneva, it was decided to combine the themes of “Access” and “internet as an Engine for Growth and Development”.

2. Following advice from MAG members and volunteers, and through a Doodle poll, the theme for the session was finalized as “Policies Enabling Access, Growth And Development On The Internet".

3. Including this, a total of 9 emails have been circulated to the MAG seeking their comments, advice and inputs.

4. 16 members of the MAG had very kindly volunteered to support the session. Several of them have made valuable contributions. The background note and possible policy questions are a result of the combined input of all volunteers.

5. An update on the session and progress was provide at the 2nd MAG meeting in Paris in May 2014.

6. After confirmation from our Turkish hosts in Paris, that a main session can be held in a roundtable format, it was decided to hold the session in a hollow square (roundtable) format. This is the first time that a main session is being held as a roundtable in the hope that it will not only have time for a larger number of distinguished panelists but will also be accompanied by an informal setting to allow for greater interactions with the session attendees and remote participants.

7. Members of the MAG and volunteers recommended a total of 29 names across the 5 stakeholder groups – government, business, civil society, technical community, academia and international organisations. The square table can take either 20 (5 on each side) or 24 panelists at best. 20 panelists are preferred. The first round of 19 invitations was sent in June 13 confirmations (2 tentative) have been received till date. The second round of invitations will be sent out next week.

8. Of the 19 invitations sent out, 12 were to panelists from developing countries, 4 to panelists from developed countries and 3 to panelist from international organisations. The 19 invitees representing a near 50:50 gender balance. The gender balance has been maintained in the confirmations received.

9. At this time, conference calls are planned between the various panelists by end-July / August to get all participants up to speed and finalize 5-6 public policy questions representing both subthemes.

10. Mr. Martin Levy, has very kindly agreed to support our efforts as one of the moderators.

11. We will move this discussion to the list indicated by Chengetai, dedicated to this session. So far evry attempt ahs been made to seek as broad as possible – comments, inputs and suggestions from all MAG members.

12. Special thanks to Anriette, Patrick, Judy, Hossam, Yuliya, Peter, Anna and Olga, for their contributions.
An update with names confirmed by the end July, will be circulated to all members. In case any stakeholder group or region is unrepresented, we will request MAG members to recommend additional names.
Trust this is helpful.
Warms regards
Virat Bhatia

Hi Bill and all,

The session was integrated according to suggestions and agreements on the MAG call and the panelists are being approached in accordance. And have begun receiving confirmations.

Do please suggest any names that you think might add value to the session.

The three key threads now agreed upon are:

1. - How does the IGF respond to suggestions and recommendations of improvements from the CSTD WG

2. - Challenges and key issues in IG and IGF’s response to the evolving internet ecosystem and other IG processes like WSIS, CSTD, Netmundial etc and other global initiatives.

3. -Vision for the future including identifying some practical suggestions and solutions for strengthening the IGF and increasing its impact and deliverables

Even the external processes and initiatives that we had discussed would be interwoven in the session with their specific relevance to strengthening the IGF and their responses to the evolving Internet ecosystem with special emphasis on the recommendations by the CSTD WG on IGF improvements (as suggested by Vlada & others).

The panel is proposed in a townhall format with a deep well at the centre, so that we have adequate representation from all stakeholder groups and also encourage new voices while keeping the session interactive.

There will be a session rapporteur so that practical implementable suggestions which emerge from the floor are captured.

As always suggestions and comments towards making this session more constructive are welcome from all MAG members.

regards

Subi

Hi Carolina

If you are still open to suggestions, why don’t we take the conversation to the IANA list that was set up for this and unburden the main MAG list and thread subject, which is quickly becoming an umbrella for all kinds of things. If you could lay out where things stand with the line-up etc. we could go from there…ok?

Hi Bill,
Thanks for the comments.
Please let us now of your suggestions. Some panelists might not be able to make it so there is scope for new names.
Particularly welcome are suggestions from Asia-Pacific names and non-technical community as you mention.

Carolina

Hi Bill, All:

Just for the records, Susan and I sent to this list (IGFMag list) messages on call for comments and updates on 19 May, 20 May, 15 June and to the IANA email on 2 July.

Sorry for not mentioning that, maybe I could have picked other examples, I just meant to highlight that most of the dedicated spaces the secretariat set up weren’t being used for focused session planning discussions. In previous years these often saw extensive debate on issue framing and speakers, and it was easier to see two months from the meeting what the status of each was.

As mentioned last week, we're now contacting the panelists and have received many confirmations.
We look forward to your feedback and we'll keep you updated on the process.

Unfortunately Susan’s 16 June message with suggested speakers came at a particularly busy time prior to ICANN London so I didn’t correctly understand it as last call before speaker invitations went out. I’d have probably suggested a more diverse rather than overwhelmingly technical community line-up, but as they say, you snooze, you lose…:-)

Cheers

Bill

Hi

I had assumed that we only needed to reply to all if we were opposed to doing the meeting tomorrow, but if more +1’s are desired here’s another one.

On a related note, I just had a look at the mail lists and web spaces that were set up for planning the main sessions and there does not appear to have been much activity in some, e.g. the IANA session mail list has one message in its archive and none in the web space, and the evolution of IG and IGF session has no mail since mid-April in the archive and and no messages in the web space.

With regard to the evolution session, on the last MAG call we agreed some modifications to the initial proposal so that the discussion moves from external events like NETmundial from which IGF can learn etc. to discussing for a bit what concretely the IGF could do to strengthen discussions and outputs. I hope we can now take this forward and plan the session accordingly.

Best,

Bill
