[IGFmaglist] Suggestion for main theme of IGF 2015

Dear colleagues from the MAG
Let me put forward some more arguments regarding Jandyr`s proposal.
1) The outcome declaration from the NETmundial meeting has been built by
a multistakeholder process that has been praised by most participants of
the event, from all multistakeholder groups. Even if the principles and
recommendations that are proposed in the declaration can be challenged
at any point in time by the community, they should be considered as a
legacy which we all should be proud of and that we should carry on.
2) However, because of the timing, the declaration could not in fact be
adequately considered during IGF 2014, since all workshops and subthemes
for Istanbul had been proposed / defined before the NETmundial event in
São Paulo. So the NETmundial declaration has been in fact subject of an
event only at Day 0 in Istanbul (even it has been referred to in various
workshops and sessions), so outside the main programme.
3) It would be thus highly interesting to take the NETmundial
declaration now as an important input for IGF 2015. The roadmap
established by the NM declaration proposes further discussions on
several themes that are extremely relevant for the evolution of the
Internet Governance ecosystem. And the declaration firmly proposes the
strengthening of the IGF, suggesting that it is the most adequate forum
to address, in a multistakeholder setting, issues that are not covered
by existing entities, processes, and fora.
4) Especially in 2015, when the UNGA will decide on the continuation of
IGF, it would be very relevant to show that the community (in fact all
its stakeholder groups) firmly proposes, by means of the NETmundial
declaration, the IGF as the main forum for the discussion of all themes
that are relevant for the evolution of the IG ecosystem. And the main
theme of the IGF 2015 could clearly show that the IGF accepts this role
and is up to the challenge proposed by the community itself.
5) Brazil and CGI.br are deeply committed to make IGF 2015 a success and
to help, as far as we can, to strengthen the IGF and to ensure its
continuation as main forum for the discussion of the future of IG. By
building this bridge between the NETmundial declaration recommendations,
developed in a true multistakeholder way, and the IGF, we think we will
be working towards this common goal.
6) The proposed theme also creates the required bridge between the
evolution of the IG ecosystem and the sustainable development goals. IGF
2015 could explicitly discuss, through its workshops and main sessions,
how advancing the IG ecosystem (and following on the path of the
NETmundial recommendations) we can help society and governments to meet
those goals.
