Dear MAG colleagues,

In recent discussions of the WG-Strategy, it was agreed that there would be value in the MAG issuing an open, public communication regarding the Global Digital Compact (GDC), the current open survey for GDC input, and the process to develop the GDC more generally.

At the link below is a draft of such a communication - this has been through some iteration based on feedback from members of the WG-Strategy, but it remains a draft at this point.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1yfbBxO-XNjA3BeZlSycPMHYC_I9wUBqzbxe-xAkH9h8/edit?usp=sharing

The WG-Strategy is asking the MAG to consider whether it would collectively be willing to issue such a statement, and seek any feedback on refining the message to better align with the MAG’s agreed position.

There are several important points (“asks”) in the document, which can be summarised as:

1. Encouraging (and facilitating) the input of NRIs to the GDC process
2. Encouraging (and facilitating) the input of IGF intercessional activities to the GDC process
3. Ensuring that the outputs of IGF 2022 will be integrated into GDC development (despite the event taking place after the current deadline for the survey)
4. Quickly defining the process for developing the GDC, looking to multistakeholder models that have worked well in the past, such as NetMundial.

I realise that this is a period when our collective minds are on other, pressing tasks, but the WG-Strategy encourages the MAG to consider this as an important opportunity to contribute to the GDC discussions.

Comments are welcome on the draft, and I would also ask that this be included as an agenda item on our next MAG call.

Best regards,

Chris (for the Co-Facilitators of the WG-Strategy)
