Dear Amado,

Thanks for sharing the database structure. I noticed the structure in the IGO tab, which places UNESCO in two columns (below).

If I understand correctly, this is intended as a description of specific areas of UNESCO. If that is so, let me please clarify that “Knowledge Societies” (KS) was the name of one of the two Divisions under the Communication & Information (CI) Sector. As such, KS was a sub-unit of CI, therefore CI. In addition, the KS Division was extinct in 2020, replaced with my office (CI/POM – Division for Partnerships and Operational Programme Monitoring) – which, likewise, is part of CI (one of its two Divisions). The column on KS should be removed, and content on CI updated to include the elements of our work depicted there. Finally, there are some missing elements: I particularly highlight Human Rights, as our Sector is responsible for protection and promotion of Freedom of Expression, right to Access to Information, right to Privacy.

And just to avoid misunderstandings, UNESCO CI is a programmatic area of UNESCO, not a “public relations” one. Description of our work can be found here (and blurb below): https://www.unesco.org/en/communication-information

UNESCO defends and promotes freedom of expression, media independence and pluralism, and the building of inclusive knowledge societies underpinned by universal access to information and the innovative use of digital technologies.

Through capacity-building, policy advice, international cooperation, monitoring and foresight in the fields of freedom of expression, access to information, and digital transformation, UNESCO will continue to empower key actors with a view to ensuring that fundamental freedoms are guaranteed online and offline, in line with international standards.

This is all the more relevant to ensure the ethical development and use of emerging technologies, which have a growing impact on all aspects of the world’s societies. Citizens will also be empowered to enjoy these fundamental freedoms through the development of 21st century skills and the fostering of enabling environments for media pluralism and diversity.

Dear colleagues,

As discussed during the call yesterday, and given that the structure of this database was largely approved, kindly see a new version of the DB in editable format, so all your contributions can be captured simultaneously: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/178DXhGwjzI2bj0sFqJY9-bR8M5ie7X-o/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=100990275360526525716&rtpof=true&sd=true

We kindly remind that the idea is for you, as WGOEC members (and eventually all MAG members), to populate the first sheet with names and details of organizations that are already within your networks, and that could help expand and fill the gaps in the IGF’s communications.

We thank you in advance

Sincerely,

Amado Espinosa
Courtney Radsch
