[IGFmaglist] Change of dates for IGF 2014

Markus

I agree with your approach.

I do wonder if it is a fear of a significant funding shortfall that has prompted the change in venue after the Secretariat's evaluation visit.

A point also to bear in mind is that August being high season in Turkey I expect flight costs and hotel rates will be much higher for those stakeholders who are able to travel at that time!

Best regards

Mark

Dear all,

Many thanks for your feed-back. Let me assure you that it is my intention to be as diplomatic as possible when conveying our concerns to UNDESA. I consider it to be perfectly legitimate for the MAG or MAG members in their advisory role to pass on a message to the UN on changing the dates of the meeting.

My message would note that "MAG members have expressed concern". It would not state that "the MAG has expressed concern". While some MAG members have expressed some reservations, I note that many have explicitly supported this suggestion and nobody has spoken against passing on this message. It is not my intention to reach a full consensus within the group in this matter, as this might take to long and speed is the essence if we want to prevent the dates from being locked in.

I will also make it clear that these concerns are not due to personal inconvenience experienced by MAG members who see their holiday plans endangered, but they are caused by all the reasons mentioned which would have a negative impact on the success of the 2014 IGF at a very critical time.

It will be up to UNDESA to draw the conclusion from this information.

Unless I hear strong objections, I will proceed as outlined above.

Best regards
Markus
