Colleagues

I agree with the views express regarding the need to take action on finishing the interim chairs model.

I also support the arguments about the need of leadership in a critical moment for the future of IG.

Regards

Victoria

Hi Everyone.

1. I would like to echo Bill's and Raúl's concerns and support the idea of a MAG statement that we do not want to extend this model of interim chairs beyond 2014.

2. In light of the current IG landscape, I would definitely propose shaping a clearer voice as to how the MAG envisages the future of the IGF. In that respect I've found Patrick's proposal, which he shared in a previous email today, raises some of the key issues which I consider should be on the agenda: sustainability and new financial mechanisms, roles of the MAG and of other currently existing and non-existing positions and bodies, improvement of transparency in all processes. It could well be used as a roadmap for a discussion and a working document within this group.

Regards,
Carolina

Sorry for jumping in due to the fact that I am now a former MAG member.

I would like to say that I share Bill concerns with regard to the need of strengthening the IGF in this particular moment.
What Chengetai says in the sense that the UN SG is already taking measures for appointing the Special Advisor is a very good news. This has to be done soon. If not we will face the same challenge of appointing another Interim chair in a short time.

please Chengetai, keep us as informed as possible.

Raúl

Umm, sorry...I must remember to be clearer when writing email before the morning coffee has fully kicked in...

To be clear, while my message was prompted by Chengetai's announcement, my suggestions were directed to the group, not to the secretariat.

With the announcement of the renewed MAG, the next step is to select an interim chair, to chair the open consultations and MAG meetings for the preparation of the programme and schedule of the 2014 annual IGF meeting

So I guess this means that DESA has no intention of filling the two posts that have been open for years any time soon, and we should just continue to reappoint interim chairs and crawl along that way? I'm not sure this is the best solution at a time when the IG landscape is heating up and the need for the IGF to be strengthened is increasing, at least in the view of many folks. I would assume that funders would like more clarity too...although maybe it's already all clear to them, I'm out of that loop and wouldn't know.

Perhaps this is naive, but is there any way to get some sort of declaration of intent out of DESA?

If there's no alternative given the timeline and UN politics and we must appoint an interim, could we perhaps tie this to a MAG statement saying we do not want to continue with this model beyond 2014 and need the open positions to be filled with full-fledged appointments thereafter?

Best,

Bill
