Dear Chengetai + colleagues

This Indonesian report quotes a Ministry official yesterday as having cancelled the IGF:

Google translation:

Reluctantly canceled IGF was held in Indonesia in 2013. We have already reported to the IGF secretariat informally. They deplore, but also could not force because the cost aspect, "said Head of Public Relations and Information Center, Ministry of Communication and Information Gatot S. Dewa Broto told detikINET, Thursday (07/25/2013).

Billy explained, IGF 2013 will cost around Rp 22 billion. Where from Id-IGF organizers had collected Rp 9 billion, while the Ministry of Communications allocates Rp 2.5 billion. So less around Rp 10.5 billion. Had also raised additional funds through the state budget or from BP3TI budget, but failed to materialize.

"The budget is already tight, with some nations willing to self-finance their own capital alias. Though they as a participant should we facilitate. But what can we do, we do not want to force it. So with a heavy heart we have to cancel, we apologize to the Indonesian Internet stakeholders , "Billy whispered.

Although it has been claimed was unable to host the IGF in 2013, it was declared Indonesia informally. Government in this regard Ministry of Communications or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs should send a letter of inability to host the official told the UN chief.

Global Internet Governance Forum conference itself was originally planned to be attended by about 2,500 stakeholders in the field of the Internet over the world to discuss Internet governance is inclusive, transparent, accountable and egalitarian. The 1,000 participants of whom are expected to come from Indonesia.

The plan will be about 154 internet ready workshop held with topics AZ. Start discussing about freedom of expression, regulation, internet security, internet and other related topics.

So this is an internet forum for Indonesian diplomacy. How to formulate governance of the Internet, because each country guarantees the connectivity and each nation has their own interests.

This conference was related to the Declaration of the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) No.. 555/2 of 2000 and the agreement of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) No.. 060/1/2005.

One of the important principles as the common thread is, the development of information society in the context of poverty reduction can be aided by information and communication technology that is based on strong partnerships between government, private sector, civil society organizations (civil society), and other international organizations.

UN Secretary-General, through the WSIS meeting in Tunis in 2005, has formed a task force internet governance as the enabling condition (enabler) to ensure multi-stakeholder participation or multi-stakeholder can run active, open and inclusive.

In the context of domestic interests, some things that can be learned from the implementation of the Global IGF 8th in Indonesia are as follows:

1. Strengthen Indonesia's position as an important axis of the global Internet
2. Make Indonesia as a learning resource for the nation / country
3. Indonesian community opportunities ranging global careers
4. Unlock the potential of collaboration and knowledge transfer between key actors
5. Encourage dialogue Internet governance that is inclusive, transparent, accountable, egalitarian and diverse stakeholders involved
6. Stimulate growth and domestic Internet access market

Thank you Chengetai, much appreciated.
Sardjoeni do you have some updates from the Indonesian side?

It is important that MAG discusses and clarifies rumors about IGF whenever these appear (esp. such important issues), and informs the wider community about findings.

Best!

	Vlada

Dear Vlada,

While as a general policy I do not like commenting on rumours, I am very aware that there have been some rumours flying around that the IGF in Bali has been cancelled.

However, neither the IGF Secretariat nor UNDESA in New York have received any official notification of such. We are in contact with the Indonesian authorities discussing all the aspects related to hosting 2013, and we will let you know as soon as any significant development occurs.

Best regards,

Chengetai
